Gerard Manley Hopkins was born in Stratford, Essex, on July 28, 1844, as the eldest of nine children to Manley and Catherine Hopkins, née Smith. Francis Joseph Thompson was born on December 18, 1859 in Lancashire, England, to Charles and Mary Turner Morton Thompson. Thompson's sisters Mary (later Sister Mary Austin) and Margaret were born in 1861 and 1863, respectively.
